People sometimes ask me when I’m shooting ‘Don’t you just want to relax and and enjoy yourself and be in the moment?’ and I never know quite what to answer. The truth is this IS me relaxing and enjoying myself. Experimenting with light and motion, shadows and composition in my own home energises me like nothing else. I feel alive and excited and contented all at once, in the same way others might feel when they’re engrossed in a good book or playing the guitar. And better still, I get these beautiful souvenirs to keep afterward.
My favourite thing about shooting at home and for myself is that there is no pressure to produce a perfect image. In my own garden I feel free to explore my settings and experiment with different techniques. I spent ten minutes shooting the action in our own backyard while the kids’ interest moved from the garden beds, to the swings, to the trampoline and back again. I played around with motion and practised some panning to capture the mood of the constant movement of the children.
