The Butterfly

“The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough.”

~Rabindranath Tagore

We went for a bike ride last week and he keenly spotted this butterfly lying in the grass. It was missing an eye and it’s wings were worn and a little tatty around the edges so we quickly realised it was deceased. It’s a little tragic the tale of the butterfly; some butterflies only live for four days, some a matter of a few months, which is something that google later taught us. Either way it’s not often you get to admire the beautiful details of these creatures so close.

Walking in the bush

“Walking in the bush, walking in the bush.

There is nothing quite like it, walking in the bush…”

Last weekend we went a local National Park for a picnic with family. It was a beautifully warm Winter’s Day and while it wasn’t quite beach weather it was perfect for a bush stroll. The kids had a blast splashing in puddles, drawing in the sand, and generally running amok with their cousins. We added about another 25 sticks to our ever growing stick collection (don’t ask).

Memories

On this cold and cloudy day I really needed to see these. Even though they were only taken three months ago I had forgotten they had even existed (I know, I know, I take a lot of photos so it happens!). They are from one of the last days of our last holiday. It was one of those perfect afternoons as the sun went down that I felt a strong sense that “we are making important memories right now”.

As a child, many of my happiest memories were made at the beach and they still are. I was thinking that it’s funny how things change but some things will always be the same. The rhythmic ebb and flow of the tide, back and forth, for millions of years – a continuous presence while everything around it comes and goes and changes.

Just yesterday I was looking at photos from my own childhood. I realised then that one of the reasons that I am somewhat obsessed with photography is that I’m also terribly nostalgic – my photography is really just a feeble and desperate attempt to hold on to that fleeting moment for just a fraction of a second longer. To make something permanent and tangible in a world that is constantly in a state of flux. The realisation was sad and comforting all at once but I’m sure many of my photographer friends can relate.

Week 8 // Parklife

It doesn’t matter that we have a lot of the same equipment at their disposal in our backyard they both love a good park outing. They can *mostly* play cooperatively now with Oscar happy to push Lola on the swings and Lola happy to accept. Unfortunately when it comes to the scooter there is almost never any cooperation.

Week 6 // The Sprinkler

It turns out that running through the sprinkler is still as much fun when you’re thirty as it is when you’re three. One big kid and two little ones had a great afternoon in the backyard running and jumping through the sprinkler.

Week 5 // Lazy Summer Days

Five weeks into the year and the beach is not getting boring for these little beach bums. Apologies in advance for the ridiculous amount of beach spam that is to come over the next couple of weeks but living on the coast we just live for summer.

Week 4 // ‘The Tightrope’

We don’t get out at sunset very often at the moment. Being Summer the kids are well and truly on their way to bed by that time. On this particular day we were coming home from dinner out when we spotted this little spot where the gorgeous sky was reflected so nicely off the water. We didn’t stay too long. Just long enough for a few rounds of ‘walk the tightrope’ and a little explore of the foreshore. If only every day ended so beautifully.

Week 3 // When Daddy Comes Home

They got used to having Tim around while he was home for a few weeks over the Christmas break. When he returned to his usual busy work schedule they would ask when he would be home at least five… hundred times a day. On this particular day they waited anxiously, peering through the blinds at the sound of every passing car before finally the big man himself arrived home. Lola adorned in her brother’s hat and gumboots (because why the hell not?!) rushed to cuddle him and help him down the driveway. You would think a celebrity was arriving on the red carpet with the welcome he was given.

Week 2 2016 // Freedom

After a week trapped inside with illness passing from one person to another we were finally able to rejoin the land of the living. We headed to the beach because, well, where else do you go when it’s summer in Australia?!

10 on 10: January 2016 // Window washing day

So I’ve recently joined a 10:10 blog circle. Each month on the 10th we post 10 images taken during the previous month. I decided this month to include a set of 10 images. I have to admit that ‘window washing day’ is quite a rare and sporadic occurrence in our house and is usually fuelled by some special event which requires our house to appear habitable to outsiders. But it doesn’t take long for the fingerprint collection to build up again.

To follow the circle please continue on to check out my very talented friend Sara’s 10:10: https://iamnotaphotog.wordpress.com/2016/01/09/january/
